J.R. Benson is best known for his managerial
brilliance. Though he's best known for his
managing work in California, he has been
all over the country leading various wrestlers
to stardom. As a rookie, J.R. obtained the
prestigious status of managing on spot shows
for Smokey Mountain Wrestling out of Tennessee,
which in the early 90's was far and away
the hottest promotion in wrestling. J.R.
led a stable which included Chris Candito,
The Hornet, The Infernos and the illustrious
Marty Gorman.
Back in his native California, J.R. led Chris
Candito to the CCW championship with a victory
over Sabu in a famous ladder match in San
Jose, California in June of 1994. J.R. suffered
12 stitches from a Sabu chair shot to the
head which led to a feud with Sabu which
spread to Southern California. J.R. representing
Northern California feuded with So Cal manager
Johnny Legend, who brought Sabu in to try
and finish Benson off once and for all. This
time it was Sabu who left with an injured
leg and Benson proving Northern California's
superiority.
Benson obtained his most managerial success
for Roland Alexander's All Pro Wrestling
(Profiled in Beyond the Mat). Benson was
the top heel manager from 1994 through 1997
before having a falling out with APW. Benson
managed such competitors as Mike Modest,
Joe Appelbaumer, Frank Dalton, Boom Boom
Comini and others. J.R. as lead heel manager
kept APW rocking for years with feuds against
the likes of Matt Hyson (Spike Dudley), Aaron
O'Grady (Crash Holly), Mike Diamond and most
notably The Grimes Brothers. The feud with
the Grimes' produced two of APW's most memorable
moments in it's promotions history, Vicious
Vic Grimes diving off the 15 foot garage
door driving Benson through a table and Grimes
wrapping Benson in barbed wire in the only
barbed wire moment in APW history!
Currently J.R. is managing in XPW, the most
violent hardcore promotion in the world.
His newest charge, Snuff, a 7 foot monster
is wreaking havoc and carnage under Benson's
direction as he continues his unblemished
streak as professional wrestling most controversial
manager.
